After a week loaded with rain-outs, the Indians finally got back on the diamond when they traveled to Bay for a conference game Monday afternoon, registering their second win of the season against four loses.
The scoring started quickly when John Ed Turpin slammed a home run over left center from his clean-up hole to knock in Will Johnson, who had gained base through a fielder's choice, and Clint Hawkins, who had banged out a double. The inning ended with the Indians up 2-0 when Bay could get a runner no farther than third base.
In the top of the second inning, Loran Ghant, Hawkins, Turpin, John Roach and Josh Dabney all scored to boost the run total to seven. After Bay was once again unable to put a run across the plate, the teams moved into the third inning, which was a wash for both.
The Indians got their final two runs in the fourth when Richie Tate knocked in Hawkins for his third score. Tate then scored moments later to put Marked Tree up 9-0.
Bay scored two runs in the later innings, to keep the score somewhat respectable.
"I was very pleased with the first three innings," said coach Matt Wright. "I didn't like the second half of the game, though. We should have put it away in three or four innings. We just seemed to lose our intensity when we got ahead so far. We've got to learn to finish a game strong.
"But I was pleased with the win. Loran, Clint and John Ed hit the ball well, but we gave up too may walks pitching on the mound. I will have to say that we were kind of rusty in the pitching department, though, since it had been over a week since we played. Anywaw, it was good to get a win."
Hawkins registered the win in 2 2/3 innings, allowing two hits and no runs while registering two Ks and putting five on base with walks. Tate came in in relief striking out seven while allowing one earned run on one hit and walking six.
Offensively, Roach went 3 for 4 while Hawkins hit two doubles in three at-bats, scored three times and knocked in three runs. Ghant, Tate and Dabney were all 2 for 4 with Ghant getting a run and stealing two bases, and Dabney hitting a double and knocking in a run. Andrew Roach was 1 for 4.
The win put the Indians at 2-0 in the 2A-3 conference.
