It wasn't a good week for the Marked Tree Lady Indians. Of four games, they managed to defeat only Bay, 8-4, Saturday in the Lady Pioneer Classic in Batesville.
"Hannah's (Ghant) having problems," said coach Waylon Dunn of his star pitcher. "She had mononucleosis and is just now getting back to where she can pitch at all. She usually pitches close to 60 mph, but she's only in the low 50s and people are hitting her who normally wouldn't get the bat on the ball. But then again we're not helping much on defense."
Friday, before the Lady Indians left for Batesville, they hosted Valley View and could manage only four hits in the 14-0 loss. Ghant struck out five, gave up 12 hits and walked eight.
Ariel Vance, Emma Terrell, Taylor Green and Christine Seals all were 1 for 2.
Cave City 4, Marked Tree 1
The first game of the Batesville Classic was against Cave City.
"Hannah had a good day at the plate," Dunn said. "And did pretty well on the mound."
Ghant struck out four, gave up six hits, walked six and allowed three earned runs.
At the plate she was 2 for 3 with two doubles and the only run of the day. Vance and Terrell closed out the hitting with identical 1 for 3 efforts.
Marked Tree 8, Bay 4
The Lady Indians finally got back on the winning track with a solid 8-4 win over the Lady Yellowjackets.
Ghant once again pitched, striking out six while walking three and giving up two earned runs.
Vance led the hitting with two hits in three at-bats, scoring three runs and knocking in another. Terrell and Green finished 2 for 4 both, knocking in two runs. Bianca Plunkett hit a home run in four times at the plate, while Field hit safely once in her four at-bats also knocking in a run. Amelia Stacy and Desiree Tull finished 1 for 3, Tull scoring once. Ghant was 1 for 2 with two runs scored and an RBI while Emily Timbs was 1 for 1 with a run scored.
In the final game of the classic, the Lady Indians ran into a buzzsaw in the form of Salem, which hit Marked Tree with a 15-0 three-inning defeat.
There's not a lot to say about that game," said Dunn. "Our lineup only went to the plate one time. They struck out seven of our nine batters. They have a really good pitcher and Salem is good overall."
The week ended with Marked Tree sporting a 5-10 record on the season.
"We're just still trying to find ourselves," concluded the coach. "The more Hannah pitches, the more she'll get her control back. We've played a lot of big schools and hope it'll pay off for us later on down the road. I feel like we should be competitive by conference time."
