He was born June 12, 1935 in Mt. Vernon, Ind. to the late William Chester and Elizabeth Ann Stone Mattingly. On April 9, 1959, he married Olar Fay Miles in Little Rock. Mattingly served in the U.S. Air Force for 25 years until retiring in 1981. For the next 22 years he served as the Safety Coordinator for Pathfinders until he retired in 2005. Mattingly was a charter member of McArthur Assembly of God Church in Jacksonville. He was preceded in death by a sister and six brothers.
He is survived by his wife, Olar Fay Mattingly of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Janet Kay and Michael Durham of Broken Arrow, Okla.; two sons and daughters-in-laws, Robert Roy and Gayle Mattingly Jr. of Aurora, Mo., Luther and Sherri Mattingly of Conway; six grandchildren; sister, Dorothy Farrar of Greenwood, Ind.; brother, Harry Mattingly of Shelbyville, Ind.
Funeral services were 1 p.m. on Wednesday, May 7, 2008 at McArthur Assembly of God Church in Jacksonville with Rev. Robert Roy Mattingly, Jr. officiating. Interment followed at the Chapel Hill Memorial Park with full military honors. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Moore's Jacksonville Funeral Home.
